Why we love this product

Magnesium deficiency is far more common than most patients realize, and the form of magnesium matters enormously. We selected this product for its use of highly bioavailable magnesium forms that won't cause GI distress — ideal for patients dealing with muscle tension, sleep disturbances, migraines, or stress-driven depletion.

From Our Staff Pharmacist

"Magnesium is one of the most common deficiencies I see, and most supplements use forms that cause more bathroom trips than benefits. Ultra Mag uses highly bioavailable forms that your body can actually absorb — making it my top recommendation for patients dealing with poor sleep, muscle tension, migraines, or everyday stress."  – Staff Pharmacist

Directions & usage

How to take it

How to take it

Take 1 to 2 capsules twice daily at or between meals, or as directed by your healthcare professional. UltraMag can be taken with or without food. Taking it in the evening is a common approach given magnesium’s well-known role in supporting relaxation and sleep quality, though timing is flexible based on your preference and provider’s guidance.

A note on dosing

Consult your healthcare professional before use. Individuals taking medication should discuss potential interactions with their healthcare professional. Magnesium can interact with certain antibiotics, diuretics, and other medications. Do not use if the tamper seal is damaged.

General benefits

Magnesium is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions, which is why its effects are felt across so many different areas of health. The benefits below reflect the body systems where the research is most established.

General benefits

Stress, Sleep, and Mood

Magnesium plays a direct role in neurotransmitter balance and neuronal stabilization, which is why it’s often associated with relaxation and the management of stress. Research has examined magnesium’s effects on sleep quality, with a clinical study in elderly subjects finding that 500 mg daily for 8 weeks improved subjective sleep measures including sleep efficiency and duration, alongside increased melatonin and reduced cortisol. A post-hoc analysis of a randomized controlled trial found that 300 mg of magnesium provided meaningful clinical benefit for stress-associated mood in individuals with stress and low magnesium levels.*

Muscle Function and Recovery

Magnesium is essential for muscular contraction and neuromuscular conduction. Research has consistently linked low magnesium levels to impairments in exercise performance and muscle recovery, attributed to magnesium’s role in oxygen uptake, energy production, and ion balance. A study in college-aged subjects found that magnesium supplementation at 350 mg per day was beneficial for attenuating muscle soreness associated with a new exercise program, with a trend toward positive effects on performance as well.*

Energy and Glucose Metabolism

ATP, the molecule that powers all cellular metabolic processes, exists primarily as a magnesium-ATP complex, which means magnesium is functionally required for energy production at the cellular level. Magnesium also plays a role in insulin secretion and glucose regulation through its effects on pancreatic beta-cell activity. Research has found that magnesium supplementation improved fasting plasma glucose and insulin sensitivity in insulin-resistant individuals, and improved glycemic control indicators in subjects with type 2 diabetes.*

Bone Health

Approximately 60% of the body’s magnesium is stored in bone, where it influences the activity of osteoblasts and osteoclasts and plays a role in the formation of hydroxyapatite crystals in trabecular bone. Deficiency increases osteoclast activity, which can contribute to bone loss. Research has examined magnesium supplementation across a range of doses and found benefit in terms of bone mineral density and fracture risk. A large prospective study found that higher magnesium intake had a protective effect on future fractures, with a more significant effect in women.*

Why Chelated Forms Make the Difference

The form of magnesium in a supplement matters considerably. Magnesium oxide, the most common form in budget supplements, has poor bioavailability and a high rate of osmotic diarrhea at therapeutic doses. UltraMag uses two chelated forms: magnesium lysinate glycinate, which is absorbed via peptide transport pathways and shown to be well-tolerated even in individuals with intestinal resections, and di-magnesium malate, which demonstrated significantly higher bioavailability than magnesium oxide in a randomized trial cited by the European Food Safety Authority. The combination is designed for people who need to actually raise their magnesium levels, not just supplement on paper.*

The VVP quality difference

When you buy a supplement from Val Vista Pharmacy, you’re buying from a licensed, practicing pharmacy, not a marketplace, not a fulfillment warehouse. That distinction matters for a few reasons.

Practitioner-grade sourcing

Practitioner-grade sourcing

Every supplement we carry has been evaluated by our pharmacists for ingredient quality, formulation rationale, and manufacturer standards. UltraMag uses Albion® patented mineral chelates, which are among the most researched mineral delivery systems available, and meets or exceeds current good manufacturing practice (cGMP) quality standards.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a prescription to order UltraMag?

No. UltraMag is a dietary supplement and doesn’t require a prescription. You can add it to your cart and check out directly.

Can I order this alongside my compounded prescription?

Yes. Many of our patients order supplements and compounded medications together. If you have an active prescription with us, you can add supplements to the same order by calling us at (480) 887-0244 and we’ll take care of it for you. You can also add supplements through the online checkout link you receive via text when you submit your prescription. If you’d rather order through our store directly (which is where you are now), supplements will ship separately, and orders under $149 will include a shipping charge.

Why does magnesium form matter so much?

Magnesium oxide, the form used in most inexpensive supplements, has poor bioavailability and a well-known tendency to cause loose stools at therapeutic doses because it draws water into the intestine rather than being absorbed. That’s why many people abandon magnesium after a bad experience with a budget product. The chelated forms in UltraMag, magnesium lysinate glycinate and di-magnesium malate, are absorbed through different pathways that don’t create that osmotic effect. The result is a supplement you can actually take consistently without GI disruption.

Is it better to take magnesium in the morning or at night?

Most people find evening works well, given magnesium’s role in supporting relaxation and sleep quality. That said, there’s no strict requirement. If you split your dose between morning and evening, which the flexible dosing on this formula supports, that’s also a reasonable approach. Take it when it’s easiest for you to be consistent.

Is this safe to take with my other medications?

For most people and most medications, yes, but there are a few interactions worth knowing about. Magnesium can affect the absorption of certain antibiotics, particularly tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones, and may interact with some diuretics, bisphosphonates, and other medications. The simplest approach is to take UltraMag a couple of hours apart from any other medications as a precaution, and to mention it to your provider or one of our pharmacists if you’d like a more specific answer. Call us at (480) 887-0244 and we’re glad to help.
