Why we love this product

N-acetyl cysteine is one of the most evidence-backed supplements we carry. As a precursor to glutathione — the body's primary antioxidant — NAC supports liver detoxification, respiratory health, and cellular protection. We recommend it broadly for oxidative stress, liver support, and as an adjunct to other detox protocols.

From Our Staff Pharmacist

"NAC is one of the most evidence-backed supplements we carry. It works by boosting glutathione, the body's master antioxidant, which means it supports everything from liver detoxification to respiratory health to cellular protection. It's one I consistently reach for when patients need foundational antioxidant support." – Staff Pharmacist

Directions & usage

How to take it

How to take it

Take only one capsule per week, preferably with a meal containing dietary fat, which supports absorption of this fat-soluble vitamin. Do not exceed one capsule per week unless directed by your healthcare professional.

A note on dosing

A note on dosing

Ultra D Max is designed for a defined repletion period, not ongoing daily use. Most providers recommend reassessing serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels after 8 to 12 weeks to evaluate the response and determine when to transition to a lower maintenance dose. If your provider hasn’t already established a monitoring schedule, that’s a useful conversation to have before you start.

Important considerations

Important considerations

Consult your healthcare professional before use. This product contains a high dose of vitamin D that is not intended for daily or long-term use, or for use by children or pregnant or nursing women. Individuals taking medication should discuss potential interactions with their healthcare professional. Do not use if the tamper seal is damaged. Keep tightly closed in a cool, dry place out of reach of children.

General benefits

At the dose in Ultra D Max, vitamin D repletion affects several interconnected body systems. The benefits below reflect what research has examined in the context of correcting vitamin D deficiency, which is the intended use of this formula.

General benefits

Vitamin D Status Repletion

Serum vitamin D levels below 20 ng/mL are considered deficient, and levels between 21 and 29 ng/mL are insufficient. Research and clinical guidelines from the Endocrine Society support weekly 50,000 IU dosing as an effective strategy for reaching the target threshold of 30 ng/mL or above in deficient individuals. Several studies have supported the safety and efficacy of this weekly protocol without toxicity risk when used as directed for a defined period.*

Immune Function

Vitamin D plays a documented role in immune regulation, with deficiency linked to compromised immune responses. A meta-analysis of 25 randomized clinical trials found a significant overall protective effect on respiratory immune health in deficient individuals receiving vitamin D supplementation. A separate study examining the molecular response to 50,000 IU weekly found that supplementation influenced cytokine signaling pathways and NF-kB activity, among other immune signaling effects.*

Musculoskeletal Comfort

Vitamin D contributes to healthy muscle fiber development and modulates inflammatory processes that affect muscle function. A randomized trial that included 50,000 IU weekly as one of the dose conditions found a significant role for vitamin D in supporting musculoskeletal comfort in those with deficiency or insufficiency. Research also suggests a role for vitamin D in skeletal muscle regeneration and repair.*

Bone Health

Vitamin D is central to calcium homeostasis, supporting calcium absorption in the gut and regulating parathyroid hormone activity to protect bone stores. Research indicates that vitamin D deficiency is associated with low bone mineral density and increased bone remodeling. A pooled analysis of 11 randomized trials concluded that vitamin D supplementation above 800 IU daily was favorable for maintaining hip and nonvertebral bone integrity in individuals 65 and older. Restoring adequate vitamin D levels is a foundational step in any bone health protocol.*

Cardiovascular and Metabolic Support

Vitamin D plays a role in regulating the renin-angiotensin system, which influences blood pressure. Research has also linked vitamin D deficiency to reduced arterial elasticity, lipid abnormalities, and insulin resistance. A trial using 50,000 IU weekly found the higher dose was more effective than 25,000 IU in correcting blood levels and improving insulin sensitivity in deficient subjects. A meta-analysis of 41 randomized trials found a beneficial effect of vitamin D supplementation on total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides in individuals with insufficiency at baseline.*

Neurologic Health

Vitamin D supports neurologic function by regulating growth factors for neural and glial cells and neurotransmitter synthesis. Research has examined the relationship between vitamin D status and neurological outcomes, including studies using 50,000 IU weekly protocols in populations with neurological conditions. While the research in this area continues to develop, maintaining adequate vitamin D levels is considered relevant to neurological health.*

The VVP quality difference

When you buy a supplement from Val Vista Pharmacy, you’re buying from a licensed, practicing pharmacy, not a marketplace, not a fulfillment warehouse. That distinction matters for a few reasons.

Practitioner-grade sourcing

Practitioner-grade sourcing

Every supplement we carry has been evaluated by our pharmacists for ingredient quality, formulation rationale, and manufacturer standards. Ultra D Max meets or exceeds current good manufacturing practice (cGMP) quality standards. For a high-dose product like this one, sourcing it through a licensed pharmacy rather than an unverified online seller is worth taking seriously.

Pharmacist guidance, available to you

Pharmacist guidance, available to you

Most supplement retailers can’t answer a clinical question about their products. We can. For a 50,000 IU formula especially, having access to a pharmacist who can help you understand how to use it, how to monitor your levels, and when to transition to maintenance is genuinely useful. Call us at (480) 887-0244 and we’ll give you a straight answer.

A pharmacy you can trust

A pharmacy you can trust

Val Vista Pharmacy is a family-owned, independent pharmacy in Gilbert, AZ. We built our practice around the idea that people deserve more than a transaction when it comes to their health. Whether you’re filling a compounded prescription or ordering supplements for the first time, you’ll be treated like a person, not an order number.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a prescription to order Ultra D Max?

No. Ultra D Max is a dietary supplement and doesn’t require a prescription. That said, 50,000 IU is a therapeutic dose intended for use under provider supervision. We’d strongly encourage you to have a conversation with your provider or one of our pharmacists before starting, particularly if you haven’t had your vitamin D levels tested recently.

Can I order this alongside my compounded prescription?

Yes. Many of our patients order supplements and compounded medications together. If you have an active prescription with us, you can add supplements to the same order by calling us at (480) 887-0244 and we’ll take care of it for you. You can also add supplements through the online checkout link you receive via text when you submit your prescription. If you’d rather order through our store directly (which is where you are now), supplements will ship separately, and orders under $149 will include a shipping charge.

How is this different from your other vitamin D products?

Ultra D Max is a short-term repletion tool, not a daily supplement. The 50,000 IU dose is taken once weekly, typically for 8 to 12 weeks or as directed by a provider, to correct a documented deficiency. Our Optimal D3 5,000 IU and Optimal D3 5,000 IU with K2 are designed for daily maintenance or moderate repletion. Once a patient completes a repletion course with Ultra D Max, most transition to one of those lower-dose daily options to maintain their levels.

How long should I take this product?

That depends on your provider’s protocol and how your levels respond. Most repletion programs run 8 to 12 weeks, followed by retesting to assess the response. Your provider will advise on when to switch to a daily maintenance dose. If you’d like to talk through the general framework, our pharmacists are glad to help at (480) 887-0244.

Can this product cause vitamin D toxicity?

Vitamin D toxicity from supplementation is possible but uncommon at this dose when used for a defined short-term period as directed. Multiple studies have supported the safety of 50,000 IU weekly protocols without toxicity risk when used appropriately. That said, taking it daily instead of weekly, or continuing beyond the intended repletion period without retesting, significantly increases the risk. Periodic monitoring of serum levels is the best way to ensure you stay in a safe and effective range. Do not exceed one capsule per week.

Is this safe for children or pregnant women?

No. This product is not intended for use by children or pregnant or nursing women. The 50,000 IU dose is formulated for adult supervised repletion only. If you’re looking for vitamin D support during pregnancy or for a child, please call us at (480) 887-0244 and we’ll help you find an appropriate alternative.
